The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed a program that is intended to assess a participant’s efforts to minimize the risk of contamination of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and miscellaneous commodities by microbial pathogens based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s “Good Agricultural Practices”, GAP compliant restrooms should be implemented on all farms to ensure that food is safe and healthy. According to the official “Good Agricultural Practices & Good Handling Practices Audit” used by the USDA to check farms, the following items pertain to the sanitation facilities at your work sites:

  • Employees are required to wash their hands before beginning or returning to work
  • Readily understandable signs are posted to instruct employees to wash their hands before beginning or returning to work
  • All toilets/ restroom/ field sanitation facilities are serviced and cleaned on a scheduled basis.
