6 Great Tips on Incorporating More Green into Your Business Practices

Earth Day 2017 - United Site Services

Make Every Day Earth Day!

On Earth Day, most of us are reminded just how much our actions impact our planet. We choose to celebrate the day by being more eco-friendly and conscientious. Here, at United Site Service we believe It’s important to be mindful of what we can do to be eco-friendlier every day. We

At our company, we make honest efforts across all facets of our organization to reduce, reuse and recycle. United Site Services most recently joined the National Clean Fleets Partnership, a public-private initiative within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities program to help large private fleets reduce petroleum consumption. When you purchase or rent from United Site Services, you are supporting making sensible choices to reduce use of energy, production of harmful emissions and use of wasteful packaging and chemicals that can harm our environment.

We’ve put together a list of five initial actions you can take for your business to extend that sustainability even further.

  1. Utilize water- and energy-efficient appliances in your office / workplace. Doing this can save $300 annually for a small business. And because businesses and public institutions consume more than 25% of the water used in metropolitan areas (according to NASA), consider installing low flow toilets. Replacing toilets with low flow models is a great start in greening your business. At United Site Services, many of our restroom trailer rental units feature low flush toilets as well as metered fixtures to conserve water.
  2. When you or your guests and/or employees wash your hands, it’s important to be mindful that another place water is used at rapid speeds are at bathroom sinks. A good option to green this task is installing motion sensor sinks that senses movement under the sink faucet.  Additionally, fixing a leaky faucet or toilet can save up to 90 gallons of water a month. Here at United Site Services we provide cost effective temporary hand wash stations ideal for use on any jobsite or event.
  3. Replace the light bulbs in your office or worksite with LED ones. An LED bulb only uses 10 watts (versus 60+ other watt lightbulbs out there) and produces the same amount of light! Additionally, they last up to 25 times longer and are now more affordable. Because of their long life and efficiency, and depending on company size and location, businesses can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year. So, while slightly more expensive upfront than incandescent bulbs, these bulbs and others like it (such as compact fluorescent bulbs) pay for themselves in saved energy and replacement costs. And another plus? The U.S. Department of Energy projects that widespread use of LEDs can save the U.S. more than $30 billion overall by 2027. At United Site Services, our units utilize low voltage LED lighting to further minimize our power consumption.
  4. Buy eco-friendly and sustainable bath products for your office, event or worksite. From bath towels, to hand soap, to toilet paper, all the products you have in your bathroom can be made more green. United Site Services utilizes toilet paper and paper towels made from 100% recycled paper.  It’s also important to be mindful of the chemicals in your cleaning products and supplies.  (For all United Site Services’ products and equipment, we use formaldehyde-free deodorizers, aerosol free hand pumps and Energy Star® equipment!)
  5. Consider sustainable construction materials – these are materials that are naturally sourced and readily available – such as recycled materials, bamboo (instead of hard to find timber), skylights (for prolonged sunlight in buildings), and more.   Additionally, consider using solar, wind, and geothermal energy sources to save considerable money on energy costs. Many of our units and trailers use solar lighting too!
  6. If you are an event planner, you can consider offering foods that are made from organic and locally grown ingredients. Doing this, you’ll not only help the Earth, but you'll appeal to nature lovers and health and wellness enthusiasts alike.

So, while we believe our sustainable actions should carry through to our lives every day, Earth Day is a reminder of the awareness we should have for our planet. I’s about positive and long-term change. We hope you will celebrate Earth Day with us this year.
